Crowns & Bridges.

Porcelain crowns and bridges for damaged or missing teeth.

  • 60 to 90 minutes per visit; usually 2 to 3 visits
  • Once per tooth (typical lifespan 10 to 15+ years)
  • All major health funds
Considered restorative dentistry at Dora Street Dental

When a tooth is too damaged for a simple filling, a porcelain crown rebuilds it back to full strength. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring to the teeth either side, both look natural, both last for years.

What to expect

How a crowns & bridges
appointment runs.

We keep things calm and unhurried. Here's the rhythm you can expect from start to finish, no surprises.

  1. Planning

We confirm a crown is the right call (vs filling, vs extraction-and-implant). We discuss material options, porcelain, zirconia, or porcelain-bonded, and what's right for the tooth.

  2. Preparation

First visit: full numbing, then we shape the tooth to receive the crown. We take a digital scan or impressions. You leave with a temporary crown that protects the tooth between visits.

  3. Lab time

Your crown is custom-made in the dental lab, about two weeks. We always use Australian labs (local in Carlton).

  4. Fitting

Second visit: we remove the temporary, try the crown, check the fit and shade, then bond it permanently in place. Bite check and polish before you leave.

Common questions

Things people
often ask.

Can't see your question? Call us on (02) 9570 4044 and we'll happily talk it through.

How long do crowns last?

Modern porcelain crowns typically last 10 to 15 years, often longer with good home care and regular check-ups. Lifespan depends on the tooth, your bite, oral hygiene and habits like grinding.

What's the difference between a crown and a bridge?

A crown caps a single damaged tooth. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring an artificial tooth to the teeth either side, so the teeth either side both need to be crowned to support it.

Will it look natural?

Modern porcelain matches both the colour and the slight translucency of natural teeth. We take time on shade matching, and you can come back for adjustments before the final cement.

Is the prep painful?

No, full local anaesthetic for the prep visit. Most patients find the temporary crown a little tender for a day or two while they adjust.

Will I have a gap between visits?

No, you leave with a temporary crown that looks and works like a normal tooth. Eat carefully on it (avoid extremely sticky or hard foods) but otherwise it's business as usual.

What about an implant instead of a bridge?

If you're missing a tooth, an implant is often the longer-lasting option as it doesn't involve preparing the neighbouring teeth. We'll talk you through both, there isn't a single right answer for every case.
