A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jawbone, supporting a porcelain crown designed to look and function like a natural tooth. We work hand-in-hand with a maxillofacial specialist for the surgical placement, then restore the implant in-house with a custom crown.

What to expect

How a dental implants
appointment runs.

We keep things calm and unhurried. Here's the rhythm you can expect from start to finish, no surprises.

  1. Consultation with us

You start with Dr Bakker. We talk through whether an implant is the right option for you, the realistic timeline, and the alternatives (bridge, denture, leaving as-is).

  2. Specialist referral & placement

We refer you to a trusted maxillofacial specialist surgeon. They assess the site using 3D scans, plan the surgery, and place the implant under local anaesthetic.

  3. Healing & specialist review

The bone bonds to the implant over a healing period. The specialist reviews you to confirm the implant has integrated, then refers you back to us.

  4. Restoration with us

Back at Dora Street Dental, we restore the implant with a custom-made porcelain crown that matches your natural teeth, fitted, polished and bite-checked in our chair.

Why it matters

Implants can help preserve bone in the jaw and avoid altering neighbouring teeth (as a bridge would). By referring placement to a specialist surgeon, you get the most experienced hands on the surgical side, then continuity of care with us for the restoration. Outcomes depend on bone health, healing and long-term maintenance.

Common questions

Things people
often ask.

Can't see your question? Call us on (02) 9570 4044 and we'll happily talk it through.

Why refer placement to a specialist?

Implant surgery is most predictable in the hands of a maxillofacial specialist who places implants every day. By co-planning with a specialist, you get expert surgical care and continuity of care with us for the restoration.

Am I a candidate for an implant?

Most adults with healthy gums and adequate jawbone are. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, certain medications and very thin bone can affect outcomes, but often there are workarounds. The specialist's 3D scan and assessment give a definitive answer for your case.

How long does the whole process take?

Typically 4 to 9 months from placement to final crown. Some cases (with bone grafting) take longer; some (where conditions are ideal) are faster. We give you a realistic timeline at consultation, not a sales pitch.

How long do implants last?

Well-placed, well-maintained implants often last 20+ years, many last a lifetime. Outcomes depend on bone health, oral hygiene, smoking status and how the bite is managed. No procedure is guaranteed.

Is the surgery painful?

Done under local anaesthetic by the specialist surgeon. Most patients say it's more comfortable than they expected. Some swelling and soreness for 2 to 3 days afterwards is normal, manageable with paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Why is it more expensive than a bridge?

Implants involve specialist surgery, lab-made components, multiple visits across two practices, and last significantly longer. Bridges are quicker and cheaper upfront, but involve preparing the teeth on either side and typically need replacing every 10 to 15 years. We talk through long-term cost, not just sticker price.
